Different ROMs are needed for each model and production variant of the 8-bit TRS machines. My Model 4 happens to be the so-called “gate array” version. It uses a pin mask-programmed 8k x 8 ROM which is not pin-compatible with common pin EPROMs. The TRS model 4 (ref /69) was one of the last models of the TRS series (and perhaps the less known). It ran at 4 MHz and displayed 80 columns x 24 lines in Model 4 mode, but was fully compatible with the TRS model 3 and in Model 3 mode actually displayed 64x16 and ran at the Model 3's 2 MHz. It had 64 or KB RAM, the 64 upper KB being used as a ram disk.

They are $25ea, and will be sent with a CD with everything you need to get your TRS auto-booting off FreHD. I still need info on your system, but so far this upgrade can be done to the Model I, Model III and Model 4 Non-Gate Array, Model 4 Gate-Array, 4D and 4P. Model 4 Gate Array, 4D and 4P need experience in soldering. I am looking for some help on how to upgrade a TRS Model 4 to K RAM. I believe it is a gate array motherboard. The product number is A. I have installed 8 NEC RAM parts, which according to the data book are cycle refresh. What I do not have are the correct jumper settings and/or board modifications to complete the upgrade.

Be aware that the description in the article pertains to Mod 4s as originally sold by Rad Shack. = non-gate, A = gate array. The Model 4 looked a lot like the Model 3, and even contained the Model 3 ROMs. If you turned the machine on without a diskette in it, it would boot up just like a Model 3.

The magic happened when you booted up a Model 4 DOS. The machine swapped out the boring old ROM for 64K of RAM, allowing it to run CP/M as well as TRSDOS 6.x or Model 4 DOSPLUS. TRS Model 4 ( non-gate array version) Tandy Corporation introduced the TRS Model 4 in April as the successor to the TRS Model III.

I previously designed a small adapter board to allow a regular EPROM to be plugged into a TRS Model 4 (Gate Array version only) in place of ROM chip U4, in order to use the new auto-booting feature of the FreHD hard disk emulator.

As I posted earlier, the assembled board was a bit too tall to fit under the aluminum shield that is present on US Model 4 computers, and it also needed a. The fact the RS card points down rather than out the back reveals its true inner non-gate array self.

The Model 4P is the first portable TRS computer with built-in 5 1/4-inch floppy drives and a full 80 x 24 character display. The TRS Model 4P is a portable version of the Model 4 desktop computer, which was released about five months prior.
